Crudo Produce Delicado

Oil on canvas, 100 H x 70 W cm / 39.4 H x 27.6 W in
Created by Ofir Hirsh, under the Beau Geste identity in 2008.

I love cutting, stretching and toning my own canvas.
After marking the canvas according to the size of the frame, I make a little cut with the seizures and continue tearing it apart with my hands. I love it; the slight effort, the sound and the smell. Yes a crude cotton canvas has a very typical smell. I actually recognize it by the smell.
Other than the piece of canvas that I stretch on the frame, the byproduct of this process is the cotton threads that fall off the fabric. After many years of only sensing them and gathering them into balls, fixing them on the canvas using the toning acrylic layer seemed like a great idea. I later painted with the oil colors as if I was guided by those threads. Despite the raw, crude feeling of the threads on the canvas, I was quite surprised by the soft, delicate result in comparison with my regular mood and colors in my work back then. Although not independently clear in Spanish, the phrase “Crudo produce delicado” echoed in mind.
I would have described the theme of this work as a surreal expression of my fishermen friends gathering at dawn, on the beach of Las-Terrenas, Dominican Republic.
