The stories of an old peasant / Los cuentos de un campesino viejo.
Oil on canvas, 100 H x 100 W cm / 39.4 H x 39.4 W in.
Created by Ofir Hirsh under the Maduro identity in 2010.

I was inspired by the stories of my good old friend Mateo, who passed away a few years ago. He was the nicest ‘campesino’ I’ve ever met, the Grandfather and Godfather of the village of Agua-Sabrosa (Samana Peninsula, Dominican Republic). A farmer, a fisherman, and a brilliant story teller.
‘Mateo Redman Jackson’ was one of the ‘Samana Americans’ (Los Americanos de Samana), a cultural enclave, the descendants of the African Americans, who immigrated to the Samana area in the 19th century and the only people in that area that spoke some English.
His ‘old times’ stories enriched my imagination and I enjoyed very much our special friendship. May his soul rest in peace.
